What's it all about?
Some of us wanted to do something to help mums and families in trouble - those that haven't got much, or who have had to leave abusive houses quickly.
We've partnered together, so that normal women, men and families buy a book though Nickel Books and then we send those books and toys to a Women's Refuge. We've called it "StorySenders".
How can you help?
You can buy a child your favourite book, or you can choose something that is recommended - I've put a few pictures up on this page to give you some inspiration!
Just click on the PayPal button that corresponds to the amount you want to give (it doesn't have to be the value of the book, it can be part-payment to a book if you want), and when you go to the PayPal page, type in what you want to give in the "additional information" box.
If you want to put a note saying a personal message (eg "love from Jack and Emily xxx"), then please put that in the "additional information" box too.This won't go in the book, but will be included in the parcel.
You could also send an email to us, for ideas, or if you want to check a specific item is available.
When you donate through this page, and the buttons below, we will know exactly what your money is for.
Then What happens?
Donations (in the form of a book) will be given to the Refuge. We have teamed up with a Refuge, who help women and children on the first steps to their new life.
Your gift will either be given to the children on their arrival at the refuge (they are given a "welcome parcel"), or will be given to the mums to wrap for birthday and christmas presents.
We hope that, in time, we will have a bank of donations, so that the refuge can call us and say "we have a family with a xx-year-old child about to move in, can you please provide a welcome gift?"

What if I want to send a different amount?
You can send multiples of the amounts on the buttons (just click the button twice!)
Or go to PayPal, and from your account "Send Money" to nickelbooks@btconnect.com. Please make sure you clearly mark it as "StorySenders" or we won't know what your money is for!
Why can't I send a gift rather than money?
We're doing it this way so that all gifts are sent together from the shop. The location of the refuge has to be kept as secret as possible to ensure the safety of the women who live there. We have already met the women who run the hostels. Plus, it saves you postage costs!
Can i send a toy rather than a book?
We want to stick to books at the moment, because they do get people donating toys already.
Maybe later we can add toys to the donations.
Can I choose the book?
Yes, you can. If you're not sending the full amount for a book, you can still recommend a book that you think a child would like, and other donations will make up the cost of that book. Please make your suggestions in the "Further Information" box on the Checkout page.
Can I put a dedication in the book?
We send the books directly from the shop, so you wouldn't be able to write in the book itself. We also want the mum to have the option to make the gift from her (as she is likely not to have any money for gifts), and a dedication would prevent us from doing that. We are happy for you to send a note (you may email this, of course), from you or your children, saying why you chose the book, or with a special message. We will forward on all messages to the Refuge so that the mum can keep them. That also gives her the option of telling her child what happened.
Please don't send general best wishes, as your donation is doing that!
I'm having trouble doing a donation using my SmartPhone, is there a problem?
This website does work on a SmartPhone, but the shopping facility is in its early development stages - it means that you see the buttons in the wrong places. I hope it will work properly soon. In the meantime, you can send donations through your own PayPal account using your SmartPhone, just "send money" to nickelbooks@btconnect.com, marking it "StorySenders"
